Custom labels from managed packages don't count toward this limit. Increase character limit for Field labels and Field names It would be nice if Salesforce increased the character limit on creating field names and labels. Currently there is a 40 character limit. An increase in character limit will allow salesforce customers to add additional characters when creating field labels on objects.
